MERREDIN BY-ELECTION, LABOR PARTY PREFERENCES
My question relates to the Premier’s role as leader of the state Parliamentary Labor Party. Has Labor decided where it will direct its preferences in the Merredin by-election on 24 November? Dr GALLOP

This issue is a question of leadership. As members know, on 26 October nominations for that by-election closed. The Australian Labor Party has indicated where its preferences will go on its how-to-vote cards. The Labor Party has no problems on this issue. It is a simple matter of principle. Our how-to-vote cards will have the Labor Party first, the Australian Democrats second, the National Party third, the Liberal Party fourth and One Nation last. Our how-to-vote cards are a statement of principle. It is a statement about where we stand on the big issues facing Australia. One Nation is a reactionary, backward-looking party. It wants to take Australia to where it never was and in the process create great division in our community. I refer members to an article in The Australian by the highly respected commentator Glenn Milne that points out some of the extreme right-wing elements that exist in the One Nation party throughout Australia. Let us consider the position of the Leader of the Opposition. Two weeks ago, the Leader of the Opposition said this was an academic issue until the nominations for the seat had been finalised. Of course, nominations have closed, the candidates have been chosen and it is no longer an academic issue. The people of Western Australia, and indeed the people of Australia, might like to know the Western Australian Liberal Party’s view on this issue. Of course, we know who are the four horsemen of the apocalypse - those members that exist in the Liberal Party who crawl to One Nation seeking its preferences. The four horsemen of the apocalypse are the member for Hillarys in the northern suburbs, the member for Kalgoorlie in the eastern goldfields, the member for Ningaloo in the north of the State and the member for Mitchell in the south-west of the State. Those four members are trying to get preferences from the right-wing reactionary party that is doing no good in contemporary Australia. The issue is about leadership. Where will the Liberal Party put One Nation on its how-to-vote cards? Where will the Leader of the Opposition put the Liberal Party’s preferences on its how-to-vote cards? Mr Barnett: If the Speaker gives me the call, I will answer the question. Dr GALLOP: Answer it now, it is quite easy to do. There are only five candidates. Who is on the top of the ticket? The Western Australian Liberal Party must come clean on this issue now so that the people of Western Australia and Australia know where it stands. It is incumbent upon the Leader of the Opposition to say where the Liberal Party preferences will go on its how-to-vote cards in the Merredin by-election. I challenge the Leader of the Opposition to indicate today how the Liberal Party will deliver its preferences.
