GOVERNMENT PROGRAM EVALUATION
I refer to Labor’s pre-election commitment to introduce a systematic process of program evaluation, and ask - (1) How many programs have been identified as not achieving their desired outcomes? (2) What financial savings can be attributed to programs that have been cut? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) Government spending programs were evaluated during the preparation of the 2001-02 budget by ministers and the expenditure review committee of Cabinet. Together with other measures, such as cuts to advertising, travel and consultancies, program evaluation contributed to savings of $852 million which were identified across the forward estimates period. The details of these savings measures have been tabled in another place. The budget papers provide comprehensive details on how each agency’s budget has been adjusted. The Government will continue with the process of program evaluation. Further information on the outcome of this process will be made available as part of the 2002-03 budget.
