MCGOWAN GOVERNMENT –– PERFORMANCE
1004. Mr D.T. REDMAN to the Premier:
Before I ask my question, I acknowledge
in the Speaker's gallery a 2019 Western Australian Local Hero and
former state and national basketballer, Professor Cheryl Kickett–Tucker,
on the front line for the Koya Aboriginal Corporation. Sitting next to her is a
lovely Sicilian from Denmark!
I refer to the Premier's
commitment in February this year when he said that he would track his
government's performance against 12 priorities. He stated —
Each
priority includes measurable targets for Ministers and senior public servants
that can be transparently tracked on the program's website.
Does the Premier think it is time to
update the performance data of his ministers given that the most recent data on
11 of the 12 performance graphs available online is over 15 months old?

Obviously, I will review that if
that is the case. Clearly, the government has decided to set objectives for
itself over the coming years. Some of them are issues that governments have
found difficult to deal with over many years. One
of the targets, as the member might have noted, is to get Western Australia
back to surplus. That is what we have done. It was something that the
previous government was unable to do, and we are two years ahead of schedule.
As the Treasurer read out yesterday, one does not need to see it on the website
to know that we have done it.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr M. McGOWAN : I realise that
the member might not follow the news that much —
Several opposition members
interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members of the
National Party!
Mr M. McGOWAN : — but
it is everywhere that we have achieved this outcome.
Ms M.J. Davies interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
National Party!
Mr M. McGOWAN : Yesterday,
Standard and Poor's indicated that the government's fiscal
management is outstanding.
Ms M.J. Davies interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Yes, I can see
that the member is keen.
Mr A. Krsticevic interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Carine! Do you have to have a voice on everything?
Mr M. McGOWAN : That was one
of the targets, but the idea is that we get government working cooperatively
across the silos of government to solve some of those longstanding issues —
Ms M.J. Davies interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
National Party!
Mr M. McGOWAN : —
whether it is Aboriginal incarceration, the size of the conservation estate,
creating jobs, delivering a surplus or lifting the Australian Early Development
Index—all those sorts of things. Some of the objectives are over 10
years and we would like to see a measurable improvement in all of them.
