Dion Barber—Legal case
655. Mr Basil Zempilas to
the Premier:
I refer to
revelations by the Insurance Commission of Western Australia at a committee
hearing this morning regarding the Dion Barber case.
(1)
Can the Premier confirm that no written or verbal apology has been made
directly to Mr Barber by the state?
(2)
If not, why not, given the Premier's own guiding principles for responding to
civil litigation involving child sex abuse document states that such an apology
should be made?
The Speaker: Premier,
once again, I remind you of sub judice and the fact that this is a case that is
currently on foot.

(1)–(2)
The nature and extent of abuse suffered by Mr Barber is something that no-one
should endure. That is one of the reasons we were so keen to ensure that we
preserved the payout as made available by the judge. I am not familiar with the
processes that the Insurance Commission of Western Australia has engaged in in
relation to the outcomes of that court case.
Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
The Speaker: Members, when your side is ready, Leader
of the Opposition, you can ask a supplementary question.
