Ecological thinning
99. Hon Louise Kingston to the Minister for Forestry:
What is the minister
and the Forest Products Commission doing to market the potentially very large
quantities of small native forest logs, up to approximately 400,000 tonnes per
year, from the up to 8,000 hectares of treated forest per year, that will be
produced from ecological thinning over the remaining term of the current
10-year Forest Management Plan 2024–2033, which commenced on 1 January
2024?

I thank the member for some notice of the question.
This answer was prepared on Thursday, 10 April—the day the question
was asked.
The Forest Products
Commission conducts ecological thinning operations under the direction of the
Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions as part of the forest
management plan to promote forest health and resilience from drought and bushfires.
The FPC has contracts for the sale of logs that are currently being produced
from ecological thinning operations. FPC continuously monitors the level of
ecological thinning being undertaken and identifies market opportunities for
the sale of logs accordingly.
