(1) $20 000 was allocated in the latter part of 1999/2000 to support a service of workshops with women in Aboriginal communities. The focus of the workshops is to: - explore all the strategies currently in use by community women around Australia; - allow the women in each community to determine what they believe would be most effective in the settings; - ascertain if there are willing participants and leaders; and - agree on strategies to commence pilot initiatives. Specific allocations for 2000/01 are to be decided after the workshop is completed. (2) Leadership by community mothers and grandmothers to assist younger women achieve good health and nutrition in pregnancy and early child rearing years. The aim is to improve birthweight, reduce malnutrition and enhance prospects of good health in early childhood. (3) This developmental program depends on the willingness of women in the community to participate. It will be progressively developed over the 5 years program in collaboration with community women. It will be evaluated and adjusted as agreed.
