HELICOPTER SERVICE
Has the State Government commenced work on the interagency task force to consider the establishment of an emergency and operational policing helicopter service in Western Australia that was announced on 15 July 2001? Mrs ROBERTS

I am pleased to report that this important state government interagency task force has commenced work. The task force, comprising senior representatives from the Fire and Emergency Services Authority, the Western Australia Police Service, and the Health Department, and chaired by my chief of staff, has met on three occasions since 15 July. The task force is progressing the terms of reference that I have approved. The government agencies involved have defined the current use of helicopters for their particular areas of responsibility, and over the next few weeks they will be defining their long-term future needs, including those of the medivac services. It is significant that all community stakeholders, including St John Ambulance, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and a number of private and commercial proponents, will be consulted. This consultation will ensure that all options are appropriately considered. At the same time, the task force will look at similar arrangements that exist in other Australian States. I have asked that the task force report to me by 1 October this year.
