(1) Yes. The Samuel Wright (1840) and the North America (1843), were recorded as maritime archaeological sites in 2008. Recent investigations have enabled the precise locations of these two wrecks to be determined. In addition a third wreck, the Cingalee (1887), has recently been identified.
All three wreck sites are maritime archaeological sites under section 4(1)(a) of the Maritime Archaeology Act 1973 (WA) and thus afforded the protection of the offence provisions set out in section 8(1) of that Act. The sites’ locations will be added to the relevant databases and GIS systems of Landgate and the National Historic Shipwrecks Database. They are currently listed on the Register of wrecks and archaeological sites under Western Australian jurisdiction maintained by the Western Australian Museum’s Department of Maritime Archaeology.
(2) Not applicable.
