b) The new salinity initiatives for this Government's 2001 budget included allocations of $8.424m from the AlintaGas sale and $2.5m for the Engineering Evaluation and Demonstration Catchment initiative. c) This Government is committed to combating salinity and will endeavour to increase the overall funding allocations to meet the salinity issues. However, this must be considered in the light of good fiscal management on behalf of the State. I am also working towards a successful negotiation for Western Australia with the Federal Government over the National Action Plan, which will mean significant additional funding to fight salinity in this State.

a) The information on how much funding has been allocated from all State sources over the past ten years is not explicitly available. Since 1996 there has been an average budget allocation to salinity of approximately $30m per year. This is considered an underestimation of the funding allocation to salinity because expenditure on other issues like waterlogging and re-vegetation can benefit salinity management also.
