Deputy Leader of the Opposition. I looked up there and then looked away, sorry!
Hon KATE DOUST : I am a bit hard to miss, Mr President!
I refer to the
asbestos found near Perth station as part of the city's Kings Square
development.
(1) Was this site on
the WA Public Transport Authority asbestos register?
(2) If yes to (1) —
(a) did the authority provide the contractor
details of the asbestos that would be found on the site; and if not, why not;
(b) was the testing, removal, transportation
and disposal of asbestos provided for in the contract between the authority and
the head contractor; and, if not, why not; and
(c) was the protection of workers and the
public from potential exposure to asbestos provided for in the contract; and,
if not, why not?
(3) If no to (1),
when was the last time the authority undertook an audit of asbestos for this
site?

(1) Yes, to the extent that the register identified the general Perth
station and rail yard.
(2) (a) No, because the register only identified
the general Perth station and rail yard area. The specific area of work was
from a trench being dug for a sewerage line and that specific part of the site
was not identified as a risk area.
(b) Yes, the original scope of contract
included asbestos remediation in the Perth station building. A variation was
then included for the sewer installation and when asbestos was identified, the
contractor declined to undertake the removal works. An alternative contractor
was therefore engaged to undertake asbestos remediation.
(c) Yes.
(3) Not applicable.
