SCHOOLS — BUSHFIRE PREPAREDNESS
53. Mr A.J. WADDELL to the Minister for Education:
I have a supplementary question. Given that last year the
minister told us that we were going to protect our schools in the ''coming
bushfire season'', why should we believe her today that in 12 months'
time our children will be protected from burning embers?

AnswerView source ↗

There is a plan to retrofit over 1 000 of these units and I
have been assured by the department that that will be completed by —
Mr B.S. Wyatt :
Using the local manufacturers?
Dr E. CONSTABLE :
Wherever possible that will be the case.
Mr B.S. Wyatt :
Ones that do actually exist?
Dr E. CONSTABLE :
It is uncertain whether they will be able to provide those ember guards.
Ms M.M. Quirk : How
can the Catholics do it but you can't?
Dr E. CONSTABLE :
The Catholic schools have only just begun the process, just like we have, and I
am sure they are aiming to get theirs done in good time—as we are by
November 2012.
