TOURISM —
SHORT-TERM RENTAL ACCOMMODATION
851. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the Minister for Commerce:
I refer to Airbnbs and other
unregistered short-term accommodation in WA.
(1) Does the state government track
or keep data on the number of short-term rentals in WA?
(2) If yes to (1), how many
short-term rentals are there to date?
(3) Has the state
government conducted any modelling as to the impacts short-term rentals have on
rent prices or long-term rentals?
(4) Is the government considering any regulations or
incentives to bring short-term rentals back to the long- term rental
market and increase supply?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(4) As
announced in 2021, via a media statement from the then Minister for Planning,
the state government is currently working to establish a statewide registration
scheme for short-term rental accommodation. The register will allow for data to
be tracked including the number of short-term rental accommodation properties
in WA, as providers of short-term rental accommodation would be required to
register their property to operate and advertise, including on online booking
platforms. Owners of properties would receive a unique registration number,
which would need to be advertised alongside the short-term rental. The register forms a part of the initiatives the
state government is progressing to better manage short-term rental
accommodation in Western Australia.
