ELECTIVE SURGERY WAITLIST
1179. Hon AMBER-JADE SANDERSON to the
minister representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to the minister's
answer to question without notice 850 that committed to publishing overdue
elective surgery and waiting-to-wait reports, which include the August elective
surgery report and the January–June referral to outpatients surgical
clinics report.
(1) When will the minister publish
these reports?
(2) Why are they overdue?
(3) Can the
minister confirm that the reports show a further deterioration in providing
these crucial services to patients?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
(1) The most
recent elective surgery waitlists and referrals to public outpatient surgical
clinics report was published on Friday, 14 October 2016, and the most recent
referrals to public outpatient surgical clinics report was published on 19
October 2016—today.
(2) The delay in
the publication of these reports was due to initial data quality issues that
needed to be rectified and reviewed by health service providers.
(3) Due to
fluctuations in some measures, analysis of elective surgery waitlist
performance should focus on trends over time. As at 2 October 2016, 93 per cent
of reportable elective admissions this calendar year have occurred within the
clinically recommended timeframe, while admitting 3 858 more elective cases
compared with the same time last year. In the past year we have reduced the
number of patients waiting for their first outpatient surgical appointment by 5
685. The median waiting times that patients experienced to be seen for their
first outpatient surgical appointment is down by 10.7 per cent between June
2015 and June 2016. Reports such as these are used to identify areas for
continual improvement.
