I thank the member for the
question.
(1)–(2) Two
inbound buyer delegations led by the Department of Primary Industries and
Regional Development were held in April and October 2019. We had buyers from Malaysia,
Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand. DPIRD has worked with the Western Australian
government's trade office in Singapore to identify and target relevant
overseas buyers to be part of the delegation to Western Australia.
The delegations visited 57 Western Australian
agrifood businesses in April 2019 and 25 in October 2019 that were matched to
their buying interests. The WA agrifood businesses involved in these
delegations have provided very positive feedback. The relationship built
between these businesses and buyers will yield
long-term commercial results. Some businesses have reported ongoing discussions
for the supply of WA agrifood
products to these markets. I have
been present at events associated with both of those and there has been very
positive feedback from both sides of the equation. These things take a little
time, obviously, to translate into orders. We have made it very clear to the
department that early next year, we would like to try to quantify this and
follow up on how these have translated into sales and positive commercial
outcomes.
Hon Jim Chown : What time
next year would you expect to have those results?
Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN : Generally,
we would want to wait around a year before we start assessing those. We will be
looking at April next year. The focus on bringing inbound in is very
beneficial. When we came to government, we found that some of the projects were
very outbound. Some of our staff were seeming to make monthly visits to
Thailand. Under the new management, we are very focused on the inbound,
although there are certainly some outbound. We are continuing to focus on
Indonesia because we recognise that we may soon get ratification of the free
trade agreement with the federal government. An inbound buyer delegation from
Indonesia focused on horticulture is planned for next year.
The PRESIDENT : You might
have blown your question for tomorrow, Hon Jim Chown.
