FIONA STANLEY HOSPITAL — MEDICAL SUPPLIES
STORAGE FACILITIES
581. Hon AMBER-JADE SANDERSON to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to reports regarding the
Fiona Stanley Hospital medical supplies storage facility in the Canning Vale
region.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that there has been a loss of sterile medical supplies due to
inadequate temperature control at the facility?
(2) If yes to (1), what are the
items and what is the dollar value, real or estimated, of stock losses?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1) The current
storage facility in Canning Vale has adequate temperature control and no
supplies have been lost as a result of storage there. However, some supplies
for Fiona Stanley Hospital were previously stored at a privately managed facility,
also in Canning Vale, and some supplies have been affected by high
temperatures. As a precautionary measure, WA Health determined that these
supplies should not be used in a WA Health facility.
(2) WA Health is
in the process of valuing all temperature-affected stock. To date, valued stock
losses through inadequate temperature control is $68 712. The items are
predominantly nutritional products, intravenous fluids, dressings, and blood
sample vacutainers .
