With regard to the recently announced $2.2 million financial assistance agreement with Whittakers timber mill in Greenbushes - (1) Did the agreement include a condition that prevents its sawn, dried and dressed timber being transported to - (a) the eastern States; or (b) overseas for furniture manufacture or similar use? (2) If not, why not, to both (a) and (b)? (3) On what basis does the minister state that his assistance will result in an increase of $1.5 million in annual returns to the State? (4) Will the minister please table a copy of the conditions of the agreement? (5) If no to (4), why not? (6) What can the minister table in relation to the agreement, and will the minister please table that information? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of question. I am advised as follows - (1) No. (2) It is because these conditions are not normally contained in the financial assistance agreement but are covered in the mill’s contract with the Forest Products Commission. (3) The basis of the statement is that timber that was previously harvested and burnt will now be harvested and milled, thereby generating additional royalties for the State. The project will also assist FPC in improving its silvicultural operations and forest utilisation. (4) Yes. I will seek to table a document. (5)-(6) Not applicable. [See paper No 2793.]
