❓ Question regarding a reported toilet paper shortage at Busselton District Hospital and potential repercussions for the nurse who spoke out. The Minister assures no disciplinary action will be taken and offers protection to the nurse.

I refer the minister to the article that appeared in The West Australian last week headed “Hospital ‘ran out of toilet paper’”. Recognising that the Busselton nurse who spoke to the journalist now fears retribution in the form of being sacked, will the minister direct the South West Area Health Service to take no disciplinary action against this nurse, recognising that she did what she did for no other reason than to provide acceptable patient care within the Busselton District Hospital? Mr J.A. McGINTY

When I read the article I was a little surprised, so I made an inquiry about whether there was a shortage of toilet paper at the Busselton District Hospital and was assured that there was no shortage of toilet paper at the hospital. Mrs C.L. Edwardes: They had been to Action. Mr J.A. McGINTY: No, I have not been down there to inspect it. Mrs C.L. Edwardes: No, they had been to the Action supermarket by the time you had rung. Mr J.A. McGINTY: Who knows? Obviously, to run a hospital properly and to run the ablution facilities in hospitals properly, toilet paper is required. Mr C.J. Barnett: It is getting very desperate. Mr J.A. McGINTY: It is desperate of the member to raise this issue when it is not true. Several members interjected. Mr J.A. McGINTY: Of course there should be no consideration of any action being taken against the nurse in question. It would be outrageous if anything like that were contemplated. Given that what the member has suggested is a bit like the absence of toilet paper in the first place - a bit of fancy and a bit of feeling about an issue with no substance to it - if the nurse feels that she is under any pressure, the member should tell her to feel at liberty to ring me and I will ensure that she is absolutely protected.
