AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM PROJECT —MANAGING CONTRACTOR —BROOKFIELD
MULTIPLEX
494. Ms E. EVANGEL to the
Minister for Culture and the Arts:
Before I ask my question, I would like to acknowledge the
presence in the public gallery of the students of North Perth Primary School
and their teacher, Mrs Sharon Downsborough. Welcome.
The minister recently announced the managing contractor for
the new Western Australian Museum and unveiled the latest images. Could the
minister please update the house on the feedback received so far?

I thank the member for the question. I was very pleased to
join the Premier on Sunday two weeks ago for the announcement of Brookfield
Multiplex as the managing contractor for the new Western Australian Museum
project. Brookfield Multiplex will be working with its architects, the local Western
Australian firm Hassell, and the Dutch-based international architecture firm
OMA. This project has been recognised as having been needed for about the last
20 years or so. It has never been actually made to happen until this point, and
I am delighted that the government has confirmed the fact that the new Western Australian
Museum project will actually be going ahead in the Perth Cultural Centre
Precinct, co-located with the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the State Library
of Western Australia, the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, the State
Theatre Centre of WA and the Blue Room Theatre. We will have a wonderful Perth
Cultural Centre with the co-location of all those arts institutions that are so
important to the people of Western Australia and visitors to this state.
The design produced by Hassell and OMA is really very bold
and reflects a very bold government that is very keen to not only announce
things and talk about them, but also get things done. If the Labor Party were
in office, this project would not be happening. During the last election
campaign the Leader of the Opposition made it very clear that the Labor Party
would not go ahead with this project. The problem is that this project has been
deferred for about 20 years, and if Labor were in government, it simply would
not have happened. It has taken the decisiveness and commitment of this
government for the project to actually go ahead. It has been under development
for about the last eight years, since we have been in government, and I am
delighted that it is actually proceeding. It will produce a fantastic building
with about four times the floor space that previously existed at the Perth
Museum site.
I was very pleased to receive a copy of a letter that was
sent to the Premier by Philip Griffiths, the state president of the Australian
Institute of Architects. Amongst other things, he commented that this
announcement ''marks the launch of one of the State's most
important projects.'' He also commented that it would be a very ''important
landmark'', ''will provide a high level of utility'' and
that the design is ''bold, elegant''. Equally importantly, it has
been very pleasing to see some of the reactions from members of the community
who have been very supportive of this project, almost universally. Some of the
comments that have been made on social media include —
So exciting! How lucky we will be
to have such an amazing facility! I can't wait until it opens. Thank
you to everyone putting in their hard work to make this happen.
That was one comment. Another one states —
Destined to become a landmark
attraction. Thanks for being brave with the architecture.
Another comment was —
Making the most of this states
abundant natural light–can't wait to see it when it's
all done!
The final comment I will pass on is —
Its about time! Looks awesome and
I can't wait to see it completed
The SPEAKER : Thank
you. Okay; member for Vic Park. Have you not finished?
Mr J.H.D. DAY : No,
not quite!
Several members interjected.
Mr J.H.D. DAY : I understand
that opposition members do not like us talking about this project because they
would not have done it. They were opposed to it. In relation to —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : I stood
up and that was the confusion. Let the minister finish and let us move on.
Mr J.H.D. DAY :
This project will also be very important in employment terms. During the life
of the project it is expected that about 3 300 people will be employed, with
about 1 800 working on site during construction. Quite apart from its
importance to the arts and the wider community in providing a very important
educational, scientific and cultural institution for the state, this will be a very
important project in relation to employment generation over the next four
years, prior to it opening in early 2020.
