QuestionView source ↗
(1) Is the Minister aware that boat wash created by vessels travelling at inappropriate speeds is causing significant erosion and silting up of the Murray/Serpentine Rivers and South Yunderup canals that run into the Peel Estuary?
(2) Is the Minister aware that the Serpentine River has algal counts far in excess of those recorded in the Murray/Darling system, and the Murray River also suffers from yearly algal blooms and fish kills?
(3) Is the Minister also aware that, despite considerable funds being expended on the Harvey, Canning and Blackwood rivers, little funding has been allocated to the Murray/Serpentine river system?
(4) Is the Minister aware that the successful implementation of recommendations in the recently published
Draft Economic Development and Recreation Management Plan for the Peel Waterways
is contingent on the ability of the Department of Planning and Infrastructure to enforce or change the existing Navigable Waters regulations, and will the Minister be making recommendations concerning this to the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure?
(5) If the Minister is aware of these facts, are there any plans to address the problem and when are these plans to be implemented?

However, the South Yunderup Canals are a different matter, as they are constructed of hard limestone walling, which is quite resilient to the erosional forces of boatwash. The long entrance channel to the South Yunderup Canals is subject to ongoing siltation, but this is due to natural sediment movements within the Peel Estuary. (2) I have been advised that no comparison between the Serpentine River algal counts and those in the Murray-Darling Basin system has been undertaken. I am also aware of the seriousness of the algal problem in the Serpentine River, however, it is not possible to compare the two river systems as they are substantially different. (3) Funding has been allocated to help improve and alleviate environmental problems confronted by the Serpentine and Murray River systems. This funding has been allocated in accordance with statewide environmental and waterways priorities. (4) Many of the recommendations in the Plan regarding the Peel waterways will require negotiation and integration of State government, local government and community efforts. I will be exploring options with the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure for tackling boatwash in the Murray River. (5) The finalisation of the Peel Waterways Economic Development and Recreation Management Plan is important in identifying key strategies to address problems in the Peel Waterways. Once this plan is complete, funding will be allocated by the relevant departments according to statewide environmental and waterways priorities, and budget considerations. Timeframes will be developed to implement the recommendations in the Plan according to funding allocations.
