OFFICE OF THE GOVERNMENT CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER —2016
START IT UP WA CHALLENGE
503. Mr M.H. TAYLOR to the Minister for
Innovation:
Can the minister please update the
house on the Start IT Up WA Challenge?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Bateman for
his question. I would be delighted to update the house on the latest in
innovation. I congratulate the member for attending the daylong summit; his contribution
was most valuable. I look forward to reporting back to Parliament on the
innovation strategy for the state of Western Australia in due course.
My first initiative as Minister for
Innovation was to announce the Start IT Up WA Challenge. This is a challenge
that will support the start-up community of Western Australia. Indeed, it has
two objectives: firstly, it will support the innovative ideas that come from
start-ups; and, secondly, it will generate a new way of thinking in government
and assist government to provide better service delivery to the community of Western
Australia by taking up these wonderful ideas. The Start IT Up WA Challenge
involves an allocation of $100 000 to be directed towards the start-up
industry. We already support GovHack and Unearthed. Many hackathons are run out
of Spacecubed. We want to make sure that these innovative ideas that are
generated from hackathons are commercialised by becoming a commercial reality
and going to market. The ability to test these ideas has been a barrier to
commercialisation. The Start IT Up WA Challenge will provide an opportunity for
individuals and teams to pitch their ideas to state government agencies. If
they are successful, they will not only get access to funding, but also be able
to test and demonstrate their ideas through collaboration with state government
departments. That will benefit not only the participants, but also state
government agencies and consumers in Western Australia.
This challenge will target the
younger generation. These are the people who will be the innovators,
entrepreneurs and venture capitalists of the future. I encourage all those
people in that space to go to the Office of the Government Chief Information
Officer website, find out the details of the Start IT Up WA Challenge and
register. The closing date for applications is 24 August. This shows that the
Liberal–National government is doing something in another part of the
economy—the start-up economy. A small contribution of $100 000 makes
sure that some of these ideas are commercialised and benefit not only the
innovator, but also state government departments and the customers—the
consumers of Western Australia.
