DRAFT
TRANSPORT PLAN — RAIL TUNNEL — MORLEY
495. Mr B.S. WYATT to the
Treasurer:
I refer to the draft transport plan that has now been
released by the government and the Treasurer's statement in the house
on 23 June that —
Treasury has been actively involved in some of the planning of the
document and we will comment on the document when it is released.
(1) What is the
estimated cost of the Minister for Transport's priority project, a rail
tunnel to Morley?
(2) Can the
Treasurer confirm that Treasury has recommended that the government not fund a study
into the Minister for Transport's priority project, a rail tunnel to
Morley?
(3) Can the
Treasurer confirm that it is his view that a rail tunnel to Morley will cost in
the order of $6 billion?

I am glad the member reads The West Australian and the gossip magazines!
Mr B.S. Wyatt : It
was The Sunday Times .
Dr M.D. NAHAN :
Next thing he will be reading Women's
Weekly !
(1)–(3)
To the specifics of the questions, we released a long-term plan for transport.
It included, amongst other things, a tunnel from Perth to Morley and,
eventually, other places. Treasury was involved in that process, as one would
expect.
Mr B.S. Wyatt interjected.
Dr M.D. NAHAN :
Just hold on, hold on; the member has asked a number of questions and I am
getting to them all.
Treasury is now working with the Public Transport Authority,
the Department of Planning and other relevant agencies to expedite planning for
the Perth–Morley tunnel, including the routes and other issues. No
detailed costing has been done. The government will very shortly consider an
allocation of money for the planning. We have not done that yet, but I will
give the member the tip that we are onto this. As to the cost, we have not done
the planning; we have not even selected the route yet, so we do not know the
costing. When the member reads The Sunday
Times , he should not believe everything he reads.
