vasse research centre — STATE budget
I refer to the future of the Vasse Research Centre in Busselton. (1) Has the funding for the Vasse Research Centre been affected by the 2009-10 budget? (2) If yes to (1), how? (3) Is the minister concerned about any cumulative effect of cuts in research funding at both federal and state levels? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the member for the question. The minister has responded — (1) The 2009-10 budget allocations are currently being finalised, but it is likely that there will be a marginal reduction. (2) The Vasse Research Centre is the Department of Agriculture and Food’s key cattle research facility and, as such, requires significant operational funding in the order of $1.65 million a year. Constraints on funding from consolidated revenue, federal funds and industry levy funds must be dealt with as an ongoing management challenge. The project activities are therefore tailored to available funding, and efficiencies are continually sought. (3) It is reasonable to have concerns about preserving a basic level of funding for valuable research facilities. All claims on the public purse must be weighed against ongoing government priorities, especially in difficult times. There is an acknowledged industry benefit that derives from the cattle research and development activity at Vasse and, as such, industry will be encouraged to fund a higher proportion of research and development in the future.
