I have a supplementary question. Will the minister now admit that she is compromising the development and maintenance of the State’s road network in order to fund the massive blow-out in the southern rail link budget? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN

AnswerView source ↗

It is really intriguing. Obviously the member has to read her pre-prepared supplementary question, even though the fundamental premise of her original question has been demonstrated to be quite incorrect. Therefore, I will read the figures again because the member for Carine has obviously not heard them. The total funding for Main Roads is up to $773.2 million, which is an increase. In the consolidated fund, the amount is up from $605 million to $652 million. In particular, I indicate the figure for road maintenance. In her supplementary question the member for Carine, without any foundation, claimed this has been compromised. In 2002-03, road maintenance and minor modification were allocated $405 million, and in 2003-04 the figure is $432 million. The Government has given absolute priority to preserving expenditure on the maintenance of the State’s road, notwithstanding the fact that we are being underfunded by the federal Government in this area. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, members! The Leader of the National Party! Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: Western Australia must subsidise the national highway to the tune of some $6 million a year, because of the shortfall in federal funding. Despite this, the Government has ensured that expenditure on the maintenance of our road system is kept up. I will repeat the figures one more time: $405 million last year, $432 million this year.
