CHILD PROTECTION —
CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE — SCHOOLS
443. Hon
NICK GOIRAN to the Minister for Education and Training:
I refer to the minister's
response to my question without notice 399 asked on 7 May 2019, in which the
minister informed the house that no set of criteria is used to determine
whether allowing a sex offender to remain at school is in the best interests of
that school community and that instead these young people ''are assessed
as individuals on a case-by-case basis''.
(1) Is any training provided to
those required to perform these assessments?
(2) If yes to (1), will the minister
table the document that records the content of that training?
(3) Are any
assessment tools, in the form of policies, procedures, guidelines or similar,
made available to those required to perform these assessments?
(4) If yes to (3), will the minister
table those documents?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) In public
schools, registered school psychologists are involved in the assessment of
individual cases, as well as case management, at the discretion of principals.
They are skilled in conducting assessments, and the implementation of case
management and risk management processes for students, especially in relation
to child safety and harm minimisation. Catholic Education schools and
independent schools have access to support through Catholic Education Western Australia
and the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia.
(2) Not applicable.
(3) Yes. A template risk assessment
management plan is provided for schools with supporting documents.
(4) Yes. I table the documents.
