I refer to container traffic at Fremantle Port, and I ask: (a) what is the total container trade capacity, in twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), of the Fremantle Port in its current configuration; (b) what increase in total container trade (in TEU) has occurred since 2015; (c) under the TEU growth outlined in (b), when would Fremantle Port reach capacity; (d) does the recent fall in total port trade and total ship visits impact on the container traffic capacity (in TEU) of Fremantle Port; and (e) what has been the growth in rail transport of containers from Fremantle Port since 2015?

a)      The effective maximum capacity of Fremantle’s container terminals is estimated at around 1.5 million TEUs.
b)      Between 2015-16 and 2023-24, total container trade volumes increased by 20%.
c)      Future trade growth rates are variable and difficult to predict.  On current trends, Fremantle is projected to approach capacity by around 2040.
d)      Container trade through Fremantle is growing year on year, apart from a slight post-Covid dip in 2021/22.  Container trade capacity is not affected by other shipping movements in the port.
e)      Rail freight volume increased 63% from 2015 to 2024.
