REGIONAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
481. Mr J.J.M. BOWLER to the Minister for Regional
Development:
I have a supplementary question.
Some government departments adhere to the government's Buy Local policy
and others ignore it. How can this government make sure that all departments
adhere to it?

I thank the member for Kalgoorlie for that supplementary
question.
I will endeavour to make it a quick answer because I know how
concerned the member is about the time taken to answer questions. The member
for Kalgoorlie is right: some agencies of government do this well and support
the local community, but others are further away from that objective. As well
as the work that we are doing at the local level with small businesses, some
work is also being done through the Department of Commerce and across
government to remind government agencies and departments of their obligations
to support small business through the Buy Local policy of government. It is one
thing to have a range of policies; it is another thing to have agencies of
government follow them regularly and without question. I think that is really
important. I encourage all members of
Parliament to come back to either me or the Minister for Commerce with examples
of where government departments are not adhering to the Buy Local policy,
because the best way we can drive this is to give examples to them about where
they could have done it better.
