CATHOLIC EDUCATION —
KIMBERLEY
795. Mr P.J. RUNDLE to the Minister for Education:
I note that Catholic Education WA
provides the sole education option at seven locations in the Kimberley.
(1) What would the cost to taxpayers
be if Catholic Education WA were to leave the Kimberley?
(2) Why is CEWA
having to come to the government to ask for $100 million over five years to
address capital underfunding when it has a $4 billion surplus?

(1) Madam Speaker —
The SPEAKER : Order, please. I
am not sure whether you were given any notice of this question, but I would
have thought at least one element of that question required notice.
Dr A.D. BUTI : Thank you,
Madam Speaker, for pointing out that for the first part of the question I do
not have an answer off the top of my head. If the member gives me some notice,
I will provide him with the answer.
(2) In regard to
the second part of the member's question, I was at a forum earlier in
the year with the Leader of the Liberal Party and also Hon Donna Faragher at
which we were all asked a question about funding for Catholic schools. No
commitment was made by the member's side, so do not stand up in here
and try to be almighty to anyone because now
there has been a bit of movement, or a bit of advocacy, in this space .
We have been talking to Catholic Education all year about it. How much talking
has the member done with CEWA about this issue? He just found out about it
yesterday!
