I thank the Leader of the Opposition for the question.

This matter came to my attention last week, launched by my department and up to
my office. I have received a briefing from my office on this situation. It is
an unfortunate situation with the City of South Perth in moving forwards with
its plan and trying to identify areas of use for that building. The department
is working with the City of South Perth to help these seniors, in terms of if
they want to move into housing with a lease for life, they can access some
information from the Department of Local Government and Communities on how they
can do that. We are also working with the City of South Perth to make sure that
we help with any needs in that process. It is a very awkward situation when it
is a private organisation that is moving on. The thing that worries me more
than anything as the Minister for Seniors and Volunteering is that this will
happen a lot more in the future, and we need to work out how we will address
it. This is a very unusual situation, in which this hostel is owned by a
private organisation, and it has made the decision to move on. So we are
working with the City of South Perth. It has decided to move on through the
agency that runs that hostel. But we are trying to work with it through the
department.
