BHP BILLITON — SAFETY RECORD
I refer the minister to BHP Billiton’s past poor safety record in Western Australia. (1) Is the minister happy with BHP Billiton’s responses and actions taken to improve its safety performance? (2) What action is the government currently undertaking to ensure that BHP Billiton’s safety record improves? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) I have been informed by the Department of Mines and Petroleum that it is satisfied with the many steps that have been taken to this time to improve safety on BHP Billiton sites; the question of whether I am happy or not is a very subjective issue. (2) The Department of Mines and Petroleum has been provided with regular briefings on the actions being undertaken to improve safety performance on BHP Billiton sites. Departmental inspectors have been undertaking inspections and have interacted with BHP Billiton, and will continue to monitor and take action where it is necessary to improve safety. The Department of Mines and Petroleum is currently developing, with the industry, a new risk-based safety approach for all its mine sites.
