VENUESWEST
— PERTH MOTORPLEX — DRAG RACING
169. Hon KATE DOUST to the
Leader of the House representing the Minister for Sport and Recreation:
I refer to VenuesWest's involvement with the moves to
allow the International Hot Rod Association to sanction drag racing events at
the Perth Motorplex.
(1) Has VenuesWest
approved the United States-based International Hot Rod Association's
exclusive sanctioning of drag racing events at the Perth Motorplex?
(2) Can the
Minister for Sport and Recreation explain why VenuesWest endorsed the
appointment of IHRA as the sole and exclusive sanctioning body for drag racing
at the Perth Motorplex when it was common knowledge the IHRA has no experience
in Australia and prior to this appointment had no representation in Australia?
(3) Has the
minister or VenuesWest sought advice from the Confederation of Australian Motor
Sport on the IHRA's sanctioning of drag racing events at the Motorplex;
and, if not, why not?
(4) Will the
minister intervene to ensure that Australian National Drag Racing Association
race licences are recognised by Perth Motorplex regardless of the sanctioning
body governing an event; and, if not, why not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) VenuesWest
has assessed the International Hot Rod Association as being a suitable
alternative sanctioning body for sanctioned drag racing events at the Perth
Motorplex for the 2015–16 season. The Perth Motorplex operator has been
advised that the IHRA may be used as an alternative sanctioning body at the
operator's discretion.
(2) The IHRA
is neither the sole nor exclusive sanctioning body at Perth Motorplex. The
Australian National Drag Racing Association is considered a suitable
sanctioning body for the Perth Motorplex also. The Perth Motorplex operator has
the option of using IHRA or ANDRA for sanctioning services at Perth Motorplex.
VenuesWest has undertaken due diligence on IHRA, with particular attention paid
to the key elements of safety and technical expertise, including resources in
determining that IHRA is a suitable sanctioning service provider for the Perth Motorplex for the remainder of the 2015–16
season.
(3) No.
(4) No. It is not the minister's role to intervene in
operational matters in overseeing sporting events.
