TUNG TRAN
205. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS to the Minister for
Police:
I refer to the case of Mr Tung Tran,
a shopkeeper, whom WA Police charged after he was the victim of a gang of
shoplifters.
(1) How many
verbal briefings or briefing notes has the minister received regarding this
case, and when did she receive any such briefings?
(2) Is the minister
aware of Mr Tran's claim that he is $60 000 out of pocket for legal
fees after police decided to drop the charges after 12 months, and only just
before his four-day trial was about to begin?
(3) Has the
minister assured herself as to the probity of police actions in relation to
this case; and, if not, why not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for the question.
(1)–(3) Yes,
I am aware of the case against Mr Tung Tran. My understanding of that situation
is that there is a potential for some negotiation between Mr Tran and WA Police
so that both parties can understand the particular circumstances around how
that case got to the point that it did before it was actually dropped. I do not
want to be discussing those negotiations at this point in time. I would like Mr
Tran and his legal team to be working with WA Police on this matter.
