I thank Hon Barbara Scott for some notice of this question. (1) I have been advised by Western Power that it is proposing to build a new substation in Waikiki at the corner of Safety Bay Road and Read Street. The land is vested in the Department of Education and Training. The new substation is proposed for construction as part of Western Power’s commitment to improve the quality and reliability of power to homes in the Waikiki area, and construction is scheduled to start in 2006. It is proposed to be built because Rockingham and its surrounding areas, including Waikiki, is growing as more and more people choose to live in this area. Western Power must plan for this growth and supply power to the many new homes and businesses in the area. Currently power to homes in Waikiki is supplied from a similar substation located in Broughton Way, Rockingham, about five kilometres north of the proposed site for the new substation. Broughton Way substation is unable to cater for the expected growth in the region. It is currently proposed to build the new substation on about 1.6 hectares of land at the corner of Safety Bay Road and Read Street, Waikiki. The footprint of the actual substation itself will occupy an area measuring about 75 metres by 95 metres. A brick wall will be built along the perimeter of the substation. The remainder of the land will be landscaped with trees and bushes. The proposed site is adjacent to existing transmission lines on Safety Bay Road and Read Street. (2) Western Power is working with the local community to investigate alternative sites in the Waikiki area.
