COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTRE
334. Mr P.J. RUNDLE to the Premier:
I refer to the former federal
Liberal–National government's commitment to provide $375.6 million
towards a $750 million comprehensive cancer centre for WA.
(1) Does the state government remain
committed to this project?
(2) What is the
status of the business case for this project, which was due to be completed in
March this year?

(1)–(2) I thank the member
for the question.
The comprehensive cancer centre has
been a project that I have been very familiar with over a while. Many of the leadership team at the Harry Perkins
Institute of Medical Research have been promoting this project; in fact,
when I was the health minister, I went to Sydney to look at a similar facility,
the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, which has a similar set-up to which they
are aspiring. We certainly remain committed
to the business case process. We had some money invested in creating the
business case. That is not complete. I know that the anticipation was
that it would be completed by March, but my understanding is that it has not
been completed yet. We look forward to seeing that. Obviously, one of the key
challenges will be developing a significant new building on a highly
constrained hospital site, so that will impact on our thoughts about that. That
will have an impact on not only the logistics, but also the funding and the
cost of it. We expect to finalise the business case later this year, and a decision
on the project will follow soon after.
