CENTRE — MEDIA QUESTIONS
310. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
I refer to reports that members of
the Premier's government were gagged by his office and instructed not
to respond to questions from media on the government's management of
Banksia Hill Detention Centre.
(1) Did the Premier gag his party
room on this matter?
(2) Did the
Premier have the full backing of his party room with respect to his government's

(1) The answer to the first
question is no.
(2) The answer to the second question is that the
government is united in trying to ensure that we invest more heavily in
rehabilitation and other services at Banksia Hill Detention Centre and
prevention programs outside of Banksia Hill but not accepting criminality and
violence. I note from the Leader of the Opposition's address yesterday
and the address by the former Leader of the Liberal Party in the upper house, Hon
Peter Collier, that they endorse violence. That is their approach. They are
always out there making excuses for it. We
do not make excuses for violence—we do not. If people are going to act
in violent and destructive ways, we call it out. We do not make excuses
for it, unlike members opposite.
