TRANSFORMING BUNBURY'S WATERFRONT PROJECT
295. Mr G.M. CASTRILLI to the Minister
for Regional Development:
It was a pleasure to have the
Minister for Regional Development and the Premier in Bunbury on Friday—it
was a beautiful day—to announce the funding provided in this year's
state budget for the ''Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront''
project.

Mr Speaker —
Mr
G.M. CASTRILLI : I have not asked the question yet, minister!
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Leader of the National Party, I know you are very excited to get
the answer out, but let the member for Bunbury finish!
Mr G.M. CASTRILLI :
That is how enthusiastic the Minister for Regional Development is for Bunbury!
Can the minister please explain how
this project will benefit the people of Bunbury?
Mr D.T. REDMAN replied:
I am very enthusiastic to tell the
story, Mr Speaker!
Last week we were down in Bunbury to
see the good work that the member for Bunbury has done in progressing the
Bunbury waterfront development —
Mr
M.P. Murray interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Collie–Preston!
Mr
D.T. REDMAN : Of course it was in the budget, because it went through
cabinet and a decision was made to provide $24.9 million of royalties for
regions funds to support that development. Both the Premier and I announced
that on Friday. It supports the work that the member for Bunbury has been doing
on the waterfront development. We have seen what has happened with the Marlston
Hill development and the Marlston Waterfront development. We are now seeing
what LandCorp is doing on the Koombana North development. There are works
happening there now with AustPro Management Services Group's
development, which will pick up one of those commercial sites and put a building
on that site. We are also seeing the next step, which is the Marlston north
site at the other end of the Marlston Waterfront precinct. The bottom line is
that this government is getting on with developing Bunbury, which is one of our
most significant regional cities. I was happy to make the announcement of this
royalties for regions-funded project, supporting the Koombana Bay development,
from the Dolphin Discovery Centre through to the bridge that goes over the
entrance to the Leschenault Inlet; I believe it is called The Plug. The
Koombana Bay development includes footpaths, landscaping, car parking, an
amphitheatre, a boardwalk, a new bridge over The Plug, and some revegetation
work to protect the dunes from erosion. The Dolphin Discovery Centre is an
outstanding interaction with nature that we want to make the most of to profile
the south west and Bunbury. We are developing a facility that has a new wing
attached to it, and there is a new space for displays and interpretive
experiences; conference and meeting facilities; a cafe‑restaurant; and a merchandise
space. It will be money well spent on supporting the further revitalisation of
the Bunbury foreshore. It was fantastic to be down there recently and to go
into what used to be an industrial silo to have breakfast. It is a significantly
activated foreshore that is commensurate with a modern city and certainly
commensurate with metropolitan Perth. The member for Bunbury has done good work
in driving the next series of investments to ensure that the development is not
held up. This government is doing it. This government is ensuring that a strong
regional development agenda remains, and why should it not be, for our
second-biggest city in regional Western Australia?
