Notes:
The Frontline Incident Management System (IMS) was implemented in the WA Police over the relevant time period, which resulted in some changes to the way in which an Assault against a Police Officer was recorded. On the previous Offence Information System (OIS) an Assault offence could be recorded as being explicitly against a Police Officer as a Victim. When IMS was introduced, and offence recording became aligned to specific statutes, this capability was removed as there is no specific statute relating to Assaults against Police Officers. The relevant statute is Section 318(1)(d) of the Criminal Code, Assault Public Officer. Consequently, Assaults for which the Victim was a Police Officer were recorded as Assault Public Officer offences after the implementation of Frontline IMS in 2002. Previous audits of this type of recorded offence have revealed that in excess of 90% of all recorded Assault Public Officer offences have Police Officers as the Victim, however the remaining ~10% of offences include Victims from other areas of the Public Service (eg. Centrelink, Parking Inspectors, etc.).
Therefore the above statistics include all recorded offences of Assault Public Officer or Assault Police Officer (assaults in which the Victim was identified as a Police Officer) as an aggregate.
