(a) I refer the member to my media statement dated 25 February 2010 announcing the terms of reference and I confirm that the review will examine and evaluate the Department of Environment and Conservation's ability to manage major bushfires.
In particular the review will consider DEC's:
· preparation, planning, response and recovery in respect of major bushfires and strategies for the evaluation and management of bushfire threat and risk;
· management structure, command and control arrangements, training and resources;
· communication and coordination arrangements with other fire management agencies;
· equipment and public information strategy.
The review is being undertaken by Mr Euan Ferguson, Chief Officer and Chief Executive of the South Australian Country Fire Service. Mr Ferguson's salary and on costs will be borne by the South Australian Government. The Western Australian Government will meet Mr Ferguson's costs associated with travel, accommodation and meals incurred as part of the review. Other costs incurred in the administration of the review will be met by the Western Australian Government. It is anticipated that these costs will total less than $20,000.
The review will be concluded before the end of 2010. South Australian bushfire matters during this period may demand Mr Ferguson's attention.
(b) Public submissions have not been invited. I intend to table Mr Ferguson's report.
