I refer to question without notice C1190, asked by Hon Robin Chapple to the Minister for Environment representing the Minister for Transport, in the Legislative Council on Tuesday, 20 November 2018, and ask: (a) will the Minister verify that that sealed roads at 12 mile in Broome are 60kms per hour; (b) is the Minister aware there is a petition to the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley calling for sealed sections of Lennard Road and Windjana Road to be reduced from 70kms per hour to 60kms per hour; (c) as it has been acknowledged that speeding occurs in the area will the Minister initiate the speed reduction from 70kms per hour to 60kms per hour; and (d) if no to (c), why not?

(a) The sealed local roads at 12 mile near Broome are zoned for 60km/h.
(b)-(c) There have been no recent complaints to Main Roads of speeding on Lennard Road and Windjana Road in Derby since the erection of the 70 km/h speed signs. Given the existing road environment, installation of an arbitrary lower speed limit without changing the speed environment or significantly increasing enforcement measures, will have minimal impact on changing driver behaviour.
