My question is without notice. Under major achievements in the Budget Statements for the housing and works portfolio for the current year is the appointment of Professor Geoffrey London as the Government Architect. (1) Under what terms and conditions is his appointment? (2) To whom is he answerable? (3) Which agency will pay the cost of that appointment? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS
AnswerView source ↗
(1)-(3) The appointment of Professor London as Government Architect is a very worthwhile initiative, and credit for the Government Architect initiative should go to my predecessor, Hon Tom Stephens. Professor London receives certain expenses paid and a certain sum of money. I cannot recall the precise terms; I will provide that information to the honourable member in due course. Professor London’s role is important as it enables somebody from outside government, even though he is the Government Architect, to comment on and provide significant input to a number of important initiatives the Government is undertaking and will undertake in the future. The Government Architect is outside government. I confer with him, as do people in the Department of Housing and Works. His views are independent, and not dictated by me or anyone else. He adds value to the important works of architectural significance that the Government pursues through the Department of Housing and Works.
