944. Hon Tom Stephens to the Minister for Sport and Recreation:
(1) Has the Minister read the 1300 page report by the Auditor General for the Australian Capital Territory on the redevelopment of the Territory's Bruce Stadium which states that the process included illegal spending, illegal borrowings, budget blowouts, the outsourcing of responsibility, too little management and too little accountability?
(2) With a view to the expressed dissatisfaction of some of the successful partners in the proposed stadium, and the strong expressed dissatisfaction of the unsuccessful proponents for the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, will the Minister call on the Western Australian Auditor General to review the process for the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre to ensure full accountability and whether the Governments use of taxpayers funds will be effective, economic and legal?

The Minister Replied:
(1) No I have not yet read the report.
(2) The FAAA Act provides for the Auditor General to review any element of the Government's activities and report to Parliament his findings. It is not within my power to call on the Auditor General to take any action.
As a matter of courtesy, the Auditor General's Office has been asked be part of the process and they felt it was only necessary to be briefed along the way. They have been formally briefed on 10 June, 1999, 3 August, 1999 and 21 August, 2000 as to the progress of this process.
