Why is the Conservation Commission of Western Australia preparing a new management plan for the Shark Bay World Heritage area? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Minister for the Environment has prepared a response, but in view of the fact that the response is fairly lengthy, I seek leave to have it incorporated into Hansard . Leave granted. The following material was incorporated - I thank the Hon. Member for some notice of this question. The Minister for the Environment; Science has provided the following response: The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) is preparing two plans in the Shark Bay area. CALM, on behalf of the Western Australian Government, is preparing the Shark Bay World Heritage Property Draft Strategic Plan for the Property. The Strategic Plan is a requirement of the 1997 State-Commonwealth agreement for administration and management of the World Heritage Property. This draft plan has recently received comments from various State agencies and local governments and is soon to be released for public comment following endorsement by the Commonwealth Government. CALM, on behalf of the Conservation Commission of Western Australia, is also preparing a new CALM Act management plan to cover existing and proposed terrestrial reserves both within and outside the World Heritage Property at Shark Bay. This new plan is required because of the land that is proposed to be added to reserves in the Shark Bay area to resolve land tenure issues associated with South Peron and future management of the additional lands. A single management plan that covers all conservation lands in the Shark Bay area will be the most efficient and effective means of planning for management.
