With regard to the Mindax claims to have identified a large uranium anomaly at its Maynard Hills tenements in the Sandstone-Meekatharra area of the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia (reported in the
Mining News
of May 12 2005), and the company’s claim to have submitted two additional tenement applications to fully secure the area, and the company saying it would conduct an exploration program ‘as soon as practicable’, -
(1) Will the Minister advise Mindax of the Government’s policy on uranium mining and exploration, and prohibit Mindax from carrying out any exploration activity related to uranium?
(2) Will the Minister prohibit Mindax from gaining two additional tenements to fully secure the area for uranium reserves?

There is no prohibition on the exploration of any mineral. (2)Applications for exploration tenements by Mindax will be processed in the normal manner whereas any application for a mining lease would be granted excluding uranium, as has been the case since 22 June 2002.
