I thank the Leader of the Opposition for some notice of the question. The Minister for Police and Emergency Services provides the following response - (1)-(2) The Western Australia Police Service advises that the South Hedland Police Station became the focus of delivery of policing services to the community of Port Hedland in June-July 2002, as over time the community demographics in the vicinity of the Port Hedland Police Station have shifted from residential to principally that of commercial-industrial. As a result, an improved service delivery has been achieved by coordinating the officers and equipment at the South Hedland Police Station, which is a 24-hour facility. The Gallop Government has allocated $250 000 of capital works funding for building works at South Hedland in 2004-05, which will include the upgrading of an additional cell to safe-cell standards, internal modifications to create a new charge room and refurbishment of the public entry and general office, including a new front counter.
