FIREARMS ACT —
RECREATIONAL SHOOTERS — REQUIREMENTS
1284. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to the
minister's media statement of 17 October 2023 on firearms reform.
(1) Noting that
the Cook government now refers to the property letter system as ''corrupted'',
why was the government unable to acknowledge such concerns in response to
question on notice 1392, answered in August 2018, when I raised this matter in
the Legislative Council?
(2) What
information has come to light that has now convinced the government that reform
is necessary in this regard?
(3) On what basis
does the minister assert in the statement that ''Authorisation often
remains valid, even after an owner on-sells the property. This leaves some
landholders powerless to stop strangers from entering and discharging firearms
on their land''?
(4) Is the
minister aware that the pro forma property letter available on the WA Police
Force website makes it clear that
authorisation remains valid only whilst the owner or manager of such land
remains in that capacity?
