I thank the member for Morley for
this question and for his continuing interest in ensuring that our police
officers and police staff have the best facilities and the best resources at
their disposal in this state.
Since being elected in 2008, the
Liberal–National government has invested over $134 million in capital
for new, refurbished and expanded police facilities across the state. That is
more than double the $52 million invested by the previous government between
July 2001 and June 2005. We are therefore very pleased to go out to the
community of Western Australia —
Dr
A.D. Buti interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Armadale, I call you to order for the second time.
Mrs
L.M. HARVEY : We are very pleased to report to the house that as a result of
this incredible investment in the capital works program for police, we have now
managed to improve the investment in 112 different police facilities across the
state, ranging from police stations and specialist support services to
administrative and support buildings and other WA police premises. I very
recently had the pleasure of opening the $8.1 million new Mount Magnet Police
Station, which now contains state-of-the-art equipment. Mt Magnet has in the
past been a fairly difficult place to police and this will allow those police
officers at Mount Magnet Police Station to effectively police their
jurisdiction from a state-of-the-art facility.
The member for Morley and you, Mr Speaker, will be very
pleased to hear that we are progressing with the $14.719 million west
metropolitan district upgrade. That upgraded accommodation project has now
commenced at the Morley facility. We will upgrade Morley Police Station to give
it the capacity to accommodate up to 80 police officers into the future who
will be policing that district. The member for Morley has had a keen interest —
Ms
M.M. Quirk interjected
The
SPEAKER : Member for Girrawheen, I call you to order for the first time.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY : I
know that this is unpopular with those opposite. They do not like the fact that
we have managed to build on time and on budget a $93 million new Perth police
complex now accommodating up to 500 police officers and police staff. We are
providing fantastic facilities for our police officers. Indeed, we are
expanding the facilities so that we can accommodate the 720 additional police
and police auxiliary officers that were promised at the last election to be
delivered by this government.
We are also spending an additional $8 million on the
replacement of the existing facility at Mundijong—the Minister for
Local Government is really excited about that—and have acquired a site
on Mundijong Road.
The member for West Swan is the only member of the house who
I think in her heart of hearts does not want a police station in her electorate
and would like to see a broken promise on this. However, I am pleased to inform
the house that we are now conducting due diligence on a site for Ballajura
police station, which will provide 24-hour coverage to those people in that
district.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Members! Are you finished, member for Warnbro?
Mr P. Papalia : I
might be.
The SPEAKER :
Minister.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY :
Just to recap, we are very proud of our commitment to this $134 million capital
works project, and we are very pleased to be expanding the footprint of our
police and providing accommodation for our additional police and police
auxiliary officers across the state.
Mr M.P. Murray interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Collie–Preston, I call you to order for the first time.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY : I
look forward to visiting the electorates of the various members of the house as
we commence the openings and upgrades of these facilities as we roll out the
program over the next four years.
