I refer to last Sunday’s burst sewerage main in Victoria Park - now known as brown Sunday - and the consequences for residents of the affected area. (1) What level of compensation will be paid to residents of the affected area? (2) In the event that residents of the affected area are dissatisfied with the level of compensation offered by the Water Corporation, will the minister allow an independent arbiter to determine the level of compensation to be paid? (3) Given that a precedent has been set, if any of the residents are psychologically affected by having raw sewage in their homes, will the government direct the Water Corporation to purchase those properties? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(3) I have been quite happy to play a role in this issue, firstly, because it occurred in my electorate of Victoria Park and, secondly, because there has been statewide interest in these matters. The Water Corporation will follow the process that it always follows when claims of this nature are made. If individuals have special requests, they will be taken up by the Water Corporation.
