I refer to the Department of Justice’s court statistics web site. (1) Why is the information on court statistics provided only to January 2002? (2) When will this information be updated? (3) What is the current backlog, divided into civil, criminal and appellate lists, for the Supreme Court, District Court, Family Court, Children’s Court, Magistrates Court, Coroner’s Court, Liquor Licensing Court, assessor criminal injuries, Small Claims Tribunal, Commercial Tribunal, and the Equal Opportunity Tribunal? I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Attorney General has provided the following response - (1) The information referred to comprises the key performance indicators for the operations of the Department of Justice. This information is a mandatory component of the department’s annual report. Copies of the department’s annual report have been lodged on the department’s web site for each of the 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03 years. For the first two of the three years, the KPIs were duplicated in the area referred to as court statistics. This practice ceased in 2002-03 in favour of a rearrangement of the presentation of the annual report, such that the KPIs are now able to be perused independently of the rest of the annual report. (2) This policy has now been reviewed and the court statistics area will continue to be updated with annual KPIs. Accordingly, those for 2002-03 will be inserted into the court statistics area shortly. KPIs for 2003-04 will be included after the completion of the annual report. (3) The following table shows the current backlog of cases, or applications as the case may be, for the requested jurisdictions as at 31 March 2004 and includes appeals. Not having been formally audited, these figures should be considered as preliminary. I seek leave to have the table incorporated in Hansard . Leave granted. The following material was incorporated - Civil Criminal Supreme Court 1,524 143 District Court 1,419 729 Family Court 782 Children’s Court 105 185 Magistrates’ Court 8,374 5,238 Coroner’s Court n/a* Liquor Licensing Court 0 Assessor Criminal Injuries 462 Small Claims Tribunal 43 Commercial Tribunal 14 Equal Opportunities Tribunal 26 *Currently unavailable due to relocation of the court and the associated lack of access to files.
