Western Australian Government funding for Business Tourism in the 2006-07 is currently $1.44 million per annum which in itself is a 42% increase on any previous Coalition funding. Given the increase in Business Tourism infrastructure, this funding is currently under review and subject to budget approval. However, I would like to thank the member for this question, as I announced in Parliament and in my media statement on 21 March 2007, the Carpenter Government will inject an extra $11.9 million over five years into Western Australia's business tourism industry to attract big conferences and business events. This will bring the total WA Government funding for this sector to almost $17 million over the next five years.

Events (Event Tourism) and Convention and Incentive travel (Business Tourism) are funded at different levels because they deliver different outcomes. Both are funded for economic return. However Event Tourism provides additional benefits which include significant national and international media impact, as well as social and community benefits. Tourism Western Australia also takes into account whether an event fits the image and highlights the tourism experiences available in Western Australia and how that relates to specific target markets.
