BURSWOOD
STADIUM — RETAIL PRECINCT
170. Mr M. McGOWAN to the
Premier:
I refer to reports today that a tender has been submitted to
build the new stadium that includes a Crown proposal to develop a retail
precinct linking the new stadium to the Crown development. In 2011, the Premier
claimed, in relation to the new stadium, that —
We are not going to tie this in
with the Burswood Casino in any way whatsoever.
(1) Does the
Premier stand by his 2011 commitment?
(2) Is funnelling
families from the stadium to a casino complex good public policy?

(1)–(2)
I really do not know what the Leader of the Opposition is referring to here.
There are three preferred bidders for the stadium; their bids are in and are
being assessed at present. I would expect that in the next six weeks or so —
Mr T.K. Waldron : Midyear.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Midyear? By midyear a recommendation will be provided to government, and that
will go to cabinet. I am aware that as part of the development plans on the
Burswood Casino site, a shopping arcade is part of the new hotel development.
There is no proposal, to my knowledge—people can put in ideas if they
want to—for some corridor or linkage of shops between the stadium and
Burswood Casino complex. Indeed, the stadium will be surrounded by a wide, open
concourse area with full public access and usage. I do not know where the
Leader of the Opposition is getting this information from, but it is not what I
am aware of and it is not what is going to happen.
