140. Hon Kim Chance to the Minister for Transport representing the Minister for Primary Industry:
(1) Is it still the Governments intention to privatise the Forrestfield APB bait production facility?
(2) If so, what processes will be established to ensure that dangerous poisons such as 1080 will continue to be carefully controlled as they are at present?
(3) When is the sale/handover expected to take place?
(4) Does the national registration of Pindone premix bait permit the sale of this product to untrained persons?
(5) If not, what level of training is required of applicants who wish to purchase Pindone premix baits?
(6) Can the indiscriminate use of Pindone lead to the death of endangered species of animals?
(7) Have APB officers been approached by landholders who have sought access to Pindone for the control of kangaroos?

The Minister Replied:
(1) Several options to improve the efficiency of bait production have been examined by the Agricultural Protection Board.
(2) The manufacture, distribution, possession and use of 1080 products are currently tightly controlled by the Poisons (Section 24) (Registered Pesticide 1080) Notice 2000. It will remain the principal regulatory instrument irrespective of who operates the manufacturing facility. In addition, the manufacturer must hold a current licence to manufacture under the Poisons Act.
(3) Private sector operation is not currently under consideration.
(4) Yes. However, Pindone is currently being reviewed by the National Registration Authority, which may lead to an amendment of the requirements for supply to an individual.
(5) N/A.
(6) Yes.
(7) Agriculture WA advises it is not aware of any recent approaches.
